Hermann Zapf
Palatino Sans
Sketches of what would become Palatino Sans, circa 1973

Hermann Zapf drew Palatino Sans as a companion to the recently released Palatino Nova system. Far removed from a “traditional” sans serif, Palatino Sans bears the warmth of Zapf’s calligraphic hand. Zapf collaborated with Linotype Type Director Akira Kobayashi in preparing the new Palatinos for release. Palatino Sans takes advantage of OpenType capabilities, incorporating extra “f” ligatures and archaic ligatures in the lowercase. The Ultra Light weight, modeled on the forms pictured above, features a number of unique all-cap ligatures for display typography.
