SmartHint Technology and SmartHint Fonts
An East Asian solution for Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Japanese and Korean languages
SmartHint technology is a solution for stroke-based fonts that involves digital hinting techniques to improve the display quality of East Asian text, particularly at small sizes.
SmartHint technology enables intelligent scaling of East Asian characters. Characters are more uniform and regular at larger sizes. At smaller sizes, correct spatial relationships are preserved. In some cases, strokes are removed, although the meaning of characters is not altered. Characters are no longer prone to blurring or “crashing” into each other at small text sizes, which is common with unhinted stroke-based fonts.

Note: The graphic illustrates a magnified representation of how SmartHint technology works. The left example shows East Asian characters rendered without the use of SmartHint technology.
Like our Edge, Compact Asian for TrueType Technology (CATT) and stroke-based solutions, stroke fonts economize on memory through its handling of characters that contain multiple instances of the same radicals or graphemes – components of characters. Unlike traditional TrueType fonts, Monotype Imagings East Asian solutions store radicals just once, helping to reduce file sizes.
